Son of Hans Hansen and Sarah Jorise Rapalje.

Jan Hansen was baptized on 17 April 1644 at Reformed Dutch Church, New Amsterdam, sponsors Jan Montfoort, Jan Snyderken, Anneken Bogardus.

He married Jannetje Teunise Covert, daughter of Teunis Covert and Barbara Lucas.

March 18, 1662, Jan Hansen (Bergen) was among six who were granted a parcel of woodland "situated between the land of Joris Rapalje, next to the old path to the Bay. Done at Waelebocht," the others being Jan Joris Rapailje, Teunis Gysbert Bogaerts, Cornelis Jacobsen, Hendrick Sweers and Michael Hansen (Bergen). Thomas Lambertse's confirmatory patent of Feb. 18, 1666, village of Bedford, in which the six applicants received patents for twenty morgen of land. Jan Hansen (Bergen's) patent was also dated May 15, 1664 and "covered the northerly one-half of he farm at Bedford, late of Lambert Suydam, and designated as that of the widow Lott on Butt's map of Brooklyn." On April 16, 1697, John Hansen (Bergen) of Jamaica, Queen's County (Kings Co. Conveyances, Lib. 2, p. 140), conveyed his patent to Lucas Coverts of Queens County (on the same day Lucas Coverts and his wife, Barbara, conveyed this property to Hendrick Rycken (Suydam) of Kings County (Kings Co. Con. Lib 2, p. 142). From a deed of May 10, 1695 of Thomas Lambertse, George Jacobs, and Tryntje Jooris, wife of said Jacob, to Lysbeth Thomas (Kings Co. Con. Lib. 2, p. 53) it appears that Jan Hansen Bergen and Michiel Hansen Bergen each owned a tract of salt meadow at Jamaica South.

He is listed between Theunis Jansen and Dierck Pauluse. Assessment Roll of Breuckelen made in Sept. 1676.

He and Jannetje Teunise Covert were members of the at Reformed Protestant Dutch Church, Flatbush, Kings Co., Long Island, New York, in 1677 from Bedford.

Jan Hansen was Deacon at New Utrecht, Kings Co., Long Island, New York, in November 1677 (the first occasion in which an elder was elected at New Utrecht).
