Lora Nell Smith

West Columbia, SC – Lora Nell Smith, 95, of West Columbia was born May 2, 1922 in Atlanta, GA to the late Needham E. and Lila J. Nolan. She passed away Friday, November 3, 2017.

She was a member of Brookland United Methodist Church. Mrs. Smith grew up in Atlanta and was employed by the telephone company. During that time she served as one of the few switchboard operators at Warm Springs, GA for President Roosevelt. After marrying Rudolph H. "RH" Smith, she moved to West Columbia, worked at The R. H. Smith Lumber Company, and traveled throughout the world on mission trips with RH. After seeing the conditions in South Korea's orphanages, they adopted their Korean daughters, Annette and Ruth. After raising her children, she re-entered the workforce as a hostess at Quincy's Steakhouse where she was promoted to middle management. She worked for them until Fatz Café opened and worked there until she retired at 89 years of age. "Mama Smith" was kind, generous and forgiving, with a loving heart. She was an avid Gamecock and Braves fan. Lora Nell will be missed by many.

She is survived by her daughters: L. Annette Smith, Ruth E. Smith; and granddaughter: Lora Megan Smith all of West Columbia. She was predeceased by her ex-husband, R. H. Smith; brother: Needham E. Nolan, Jr.; and sister: Dorothy "Dot" Nolan.

Funeral services will be held at 11 AM on Wednesday, November 8, 2017 at Caughman-Harman Funeral Home, Lexington Chapel, with a private burial in Southland Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
