Enlisted on 8/12/1862 as a Private.
On 9/1/1862 he mustered into "K" Co. VT 1st Heavy Artillery
He was Mustered Out on 6/24/1865
He was listed as:
POW 6/23/1864 Weldon Railroad, VA (Paroled)
Paroled 11/26/1864 (place not stated)
Mustered out 6/24/65.

Additional Information:
Held at Belle Isle for one week.
Sent to Salisbury for one week before transfer to Andersonville.
Sent to Millen, Georgia, on 11/11/64.
Paroled 11/26/64 at Savannah, Georgia.
Sent to Camp Parole in Annapolis, Maryland, 11/3/64-12/12/64, furloughed for 30 days, admitted Baxter General Hospital in Burlington, Vermont 1/14/65-1/26/65, and Bedloes Island, New York, 1/26/65-3/65.

He never fully recovered. While he later married and had several children, his health continued to deteriorate, and he died in 1909.

Family oral tradition is that he kept every tooth that fell out during his time in prison and would rattle them in a tin box for his grandchildren's enjoyment. He told many stories of his failed attempts to escape the prison.

Granted an invalid pension in 1880.
Listed on 1890 Veterans Census as residing at Dickinson, Franklin Count, New York, suffering from "scurvy, rheumatism and piles."

Virginia Gonya granted a widow's pension in 1909 from New York. Also listed as Lewis Gonia. Three of his brothers enlisted in New York regiments. Another Lewis Gonya, apparently unrelated served in Co. L 11th Vermont Infantry from Sudbury, Vermont.
