Calvin was a farmer. while his son, Robert was away guarding convicts, he would also look after his farm.

Calvin was of medium height and build with dark hair and brown eyes. He had a sallow complexion and always wore a neatly trimmed beard. He had a sober and very stern temperament. When he spoke, his word was the law and there wasn't any further discussion, yet he was a kind and generous man who never said an unkind word to or about anyone.

He mortgaged his home so that his son, Jim, could open a grocery store. the business failed so Calvin lost his home. He moved his furniture into his brother-in-law's barn, while he and his wife Sylvania moved in with their son, Robert H, and his wife, Christian.

On August 2, 1927, the barn was needed so Calvin went with his wagon to get their belongings. As he went to unhitch the horses, he fell over the wagon tongue and died before anyone could get help.

His wife, Sylvania, died at the home of their daughter, Elizabeth, on February 10, 1933. They are buried in Leila Church Cemetery in Colquitt County, Georgia.
