GEO. COWIN PASSES AWAY
CAME TO CARTER COUNTY IN YEAR OF '67
Had Been In Failing Health for Years--Survived by Wife and Several Children
George Cowin, one of the pioneers of Carter County, is dead. His death occurred Sunday morning, Jan. 11th, about 10 o'clock at his home in the Clear Springs neighborhood north of Van Buren where he resided practically all of his life.
Mr. Cowin has long been in feeble health, in fact for the past fifteen years he has been a sufferer from various ailments which men of ordinary constitution would have soon succumbed. Although in poor health he refused to remain at home and could be counted on to be out and around whenever possible for him to do so. He was past 70 years of age and death was due to the natural breaking down of a constitution which had ever been very strong and active.
Mr. Cowin was born in Illinos [sic] in 1849 and came to Missouri with his parents immediately after the Civil War, locating in the vicinity where he died. While a young man he was married and to this union six children were born, five of whom are living, namely: Ida, wife of E. W. Lewis of Winona; Sarabelle Gresham, deceased; Zimri and Ed who live in this vicinity; Martha, wife of John Moser of Williamsville; and Maude, wife of John Rector in this vicinity.
In 1897 he was again married and to this union five children were born, three of whom survive him, besides his wife.
Mr. Cowin has long been a member of the M. E. Church, South, and funeral services were conducted by Rev. J. A. Bertram, pastor of this church Monday afternoon, interment taking place at the Clear Springs cemetery.
