NANCY EMMA LANGDON
Nancy Emma Langdon was born and raised in Kankakee, IL, the second of Frances and Naomi Hightower's three children. At Steuben Elementary she developed her lifelong love of learning and following graduation from Kankakee High School, enrolled in Illinois State Normal, majoring in mathematics and chemistry. Following her graduation in 1942, she taught math and science for one year in Monticello, IL, before returning to her high school for two years, refining her skills as a teacher.

A fellow teacher advised her that she would need to look outside the school system for eligible bachelors. So she headed north to Cicero, IL, where she found employment with Western Electric and also her beloved Fred, whom she married in 1947 and with whom she gave birth to two children. They moved to Indianapolis in 1950 and enjoyed six more happy years together until Fred was tragically killed in an airplane crash while traveling on company business.

At the urging of Fred's parents, she moved her young family to Woodstock, IL, Fred's childhood home. Here all of Nancy's acquired education and skills would prove vital as she raised her young family on her own. She taught in both elementary and secondary schools in Woodstock. Happily, she also met the widower of one of her fellow teachers, Bill Langdon. Their courtship led to marriage in 1971 and many good years together.

The demands of simultaneously working and taking care of aging parents and in-laws were hard on Nancy's health, motivating her to retire from teaching in 1972. She next became a professional volunteer while supporting Bill in his final years of teaching.

Bill's own health issues and the cold Illinois winters brought them to Green Valley, where they resettled in 1988 and enjoyed their warm, sunny days together until Bill's passing in 1992. Nancy spent another 11 years on Camino Urbano before joining her sister, Helen, in residence at La Posada, the final home for both sisters.

Nancy was committed to Jesus as her Lord and Saviour, active in her church communities wherever she lived. She loved to read, to play golf and bridge and to keep her mind active solving daily crossword puzzles and studying Spanish. She was a joiner, a member of local P.E.O. and DAR chapters, as well as volunteering her time with flower arranging and in the La Perla library. And she loved all of her dogs, delighting in their company during the years when she lived alone.

Nancy is survived by her children, Fred and Patricia Drummond, her daughter-in-law Adele Drummond, her nephew Glenn Hightower, and her niece Susan Bowers, both children of her brother, Frances, and by Bill Langdon's daughter, Suzanne Reed.

Our family is especially grateful for the compassionate, caring support mom received from the staffs at La Hacienda assisted living and Carondelet hospice in her final months with us. Remembrances can be made to either the La Posada Foundation or to the Animal League of Green Valley.

Celebration of Life service on Monday, May 19, at 10 a.m., El Dorado Room, La Perla at La Posada, 635 S. Park Centre, Green Valley.
