Johnny Ray Morris, 81, died November 2, 2017. He was a disabled veteran of the US Army Air Borne Division during the Korean Conflict.

Funeral services will be held, Sunday at 2:30 pm at Oakmont Baptist Church with Dr. Gregory P. Rogers and Rev. Beth Thompson officiating. A private interment will follow at Pinelawn Memorial Park in Kinston.

Johnny was an active member of the Disciples Sunday School Class and a deacon at Oakmont Baptist Church. He was a graduate of Charles L. Coon High School in Wilson before entering the military. He also attended Atlantic Christian College, now known as Barton, before graduating from Lenoir Community College with an Associates of Arts degree.

He then served as purchasing agent for 10 years at Wall Lenk Corporation in Kinston. He re-entered the Army Reserve AGR 108th Division in Charlotte and the 120 Arcom Medical Unit in Winston Salem before retiring in August 1996.

Mr. Morris was a life time member of the American Legion Post 39, where he served as Service Officer, Executive Board member, American Legion Fair Board, and the American Legion Baseball Athletic Youth Program. He was also a lifetime member of the American Legion Veterans of Foreign Wars, 40/8 and Disabled Veterans of America. He was a great supporter of Give2Troops.

He was an avid golfer. Throughout his life, he was a humorist and felt that laughter was life's best medicine. He received many awards for his humor and morale booster to the troops and civilian baseball teams. He loved his family and took great pride in serving others in volunteer work. He went on two mission trips through the church to Fairbanks, Alaska. He also worked with Habitat for Humanity, worked to build many ramps for people in need, and worked closely with Carolyn Spencer for First Born by collecting food and clothing for those in need. He was certified with the Baptist Men's Disaster Team and went to Galveston, Texas when Hurricane Ike destroyed so many homes.

Mr. Morris was preceded in death by his parents, Thurman and Alma Brown Morris; two brothers, Al and Jay "J" Morris; five sisters, Mary Elizabeth Hayes, Shirley Pittman, Trudy Ann, Johnny's twin Bonnie May, and Carol Hunter.

He is survived by his wife of 35 years, Jean Brooks Morris; two sons, Jerry Lynn Morris and wife Teresa and Anthony Ray Morris and wife Rae of Snow Hill; step-daughter, Dianne Sanderson and husband Derek Sr. of Greenville; sister, Vickie Hilton; brother, Thurman Wayne Morris of Concord; four grandchildren, Joshua and Kasey Morris of Snow Hill, Melissa and husband Ryan Weaver, Derek A. Sanderson, Jr. and wife Ann of Greenville; four great grandchildren, Leyton Ann Weaver and Jackson Gee Sanderson, Alex Ryan Weaver and Benjamin Derek Sanderson

The family will receive friends after the church service.
