Cheryl is my cousin. My mother told me that when she was born, she "was the most beautiful baby " mother had ever seen and she was the reason that mom wanted children. Cheryl was the oldest of five girls and the oldest of us four girl cousins. Yes, nine girls! We lived 1/2 block apart. I believe she tried to mother us all. She seemed grown up even as a child, yet was always smiling and upbeat. This happy attitude continued throughout her life. She was always smiling and laughing whenever I would see her but she, like everyone else, had hardships and struggles. She had a life long struggle with her weight and being the oldest, was usually the first to get the parents wrath. Her first two marriages failed and she was diagnosed with ovarian cancer after the birth of her son. Due to chemo and radiation treatments to her remaining ovary and tube, she was told that she could not have anymore children. Cheryl was the 'glass half full' kind of person and was happy that she had her son and was happy to be alive to raise her son. It was enough for her. And she smiled. And she laughed. And she was always a joy to be around. You would never know that anything was wrong. In 1983, years after Cheryl had beat the cancer, she began to suspect that something was wrong. She returned to the doctors for testing and they had indeed discovered that something was different. She was pregnant! Months later she gave birth to a beautiful healthy girl, her miracle baby. Cheryl was the happiest person I knew and I wish I could be more like her. I'm so grateful that she was my cousin because knowing her was a blessing in my life.
