1915 - 2004

Elizabeth Grace Trujillo Hadley, known to all the locals of Johannesburg as Betty, passed away Tuesday, Sept. 21, 2004. She was 88.

Private family services will be held.

One of the original inhabitants of the Rand District, Mrs. Hadley was born Oct. 13, 1915 in Johannesburg, the daughter of Grace Elizabeth Alcott and William R. "Bill" Hackman, originally of Pennsylvania.

She spent her childhood in the Rand and loved to tell stories of her adventures - spending the day climbing Red Mountain with her best friend, Dorothy Cote, and later, attending high school in Lancaster. She met and married John Trujillo in 1933, and together they made their home in Johannesburg, where John ran the Power Company. Children quickly followed, the first, Cecilia, and a year later, John. Nine years later, they had a son, Tim.

After John Trujillo's death in 1957, she moved to San Bernardino with her son, Tim, and worked as a hairdresser. In 1963, she married Gar Hadley, and after living in Ridgecrest, moved to Reno, Nev., where Gar worked with the Reno Gazette newspaper.

In 1966, Gar and Betty adopted her grandson, Frank John Hadley. The family returned to the Rand area in 1974, and she became a center of community activity and history lessons. Anyone who needed to know who lived where or when, or who simply wanted to hear stories of the early miners and the history of the Rand, generally found their way to her home for an afternoon of conversation and laughter.

She will be sorely missed by the citizens of the Rand; the sparkle in her eye, her wit, her humor, her sense of history, and her delight in story telling will always be remembered and remain a testament to a strong and vibrant lady, who arrived in the District almost a century ago, and remained to tell its history to all the newcomers who wished to settle here. She was loved by all who knew her and she will be missed.

Mrs. Hadley is survived by her son, Tim Trujillo and his wife, Judy; grandson, Frank John Hadley and his wife, Stacey; granddaughters, Elizabeth Jane Travers and Tally Burkhart.

Private cremation, arrangements and media information provided by Holland & Lyons Mortuary, 371-1376.
