Bangladeshi Statesman. He served as the 11th President of Bangladesh from October 10, 1991 to October 9, 1996. He was educated at Dhaka University where he received his BA and MA degrees in history and another degree in law. After graduating, he went on to chair a local cooperative bank and sponsoring several educational initiatives. He was elected a member of the East Pakistan Legislative Assembly in 1962 and again in 1965. He worked as Parliamentary Secretary of East Pakistan from 1965 to 1969. He was also Pakistan's representative to the United Nations General Assembly in 1967. In 1979 he was elected to Bangladesh's Parliament and later served in the cabinets of both Presidents Ziaur Rahman and Abdus Sattar. In 1991 he, again, was elected to the Parliament and was named Speaker of the Parliament. He was elected president in October of 1991 and served until 1996 when he stepped down. During the last year of his administration, there was an unsuccessful coup against him. After he stepped down, he retired from the political world. He passed away of natural causes.
