US Congressman. A member of the Republican Party, he served the State of Idaho's 2nd Congressional District in the United States House of Representatives from 1969 until 1975. Following service with the United States Navy during World War II, he enrolled at the University of Idaho from where he received his Bachelor of Arts. He later attended the London School of Economics and earned his degree in Law from the University of London. He would go on to attain a Ph.D. from George Washington University. He practiced Law privately, prior to entering the political arena when he was elected to the Idaho House of Representatives in 1956 (he served as House Majority Leader from 1961 until 1962). In 1962, he had an unsuccessful bid for a seat in the US Congress, prior to his election to the Idaho State Senate in 1966. During his political career, Hansen contributed to the establishment of the Sawtooth National Recreation Area, in addition to improving the Idaho State Parks Department and the generation of revenue for the state's educational system. After his retirement from politics, he remained in Washington where he resumed practicing Law.
