Thirty-Seventh Governor of Arkansas, 1967-1971. The fourth son of John D. Rockefeller, Jr., and Abbey Aldrich Rockefeller, Winthrop came to Arkansas in 1953 to visit an Army friend from World War II. Attracted by the state's beauty, the native New Yorker purchased land atop Petit Jean Mountain, moved to Arkansas, and developed Winrock Farms. He became active in state politics and was the state's first Republican governor since Reconstruction. Over the years, he gave millions of dollars to various philanthropic causes in his adopted state.
