Martin J. "Matt" Staab, age 87 of Hays, passed away Wednesday, November 1, 2017 in Hays. He was born May 10, 1930 in Catharine, Kansas to Alois and Rosa (Meier) Staab.

On November 4, 1953 he married Georgine "Jeanie" Befort at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Munjor, Kansas.

Matt had worked for C.O. Mammals Grocery Store for 37 years working in all areas including manager. After working at the grocery store he went to work for Fort Hays State University at Memorial Union with the custodial staff. Matt served in the Army National Guard and was a member of the American Legion, Immaculate Heart of Mary parish and the Knights of Columbus council 6984. He enjoyed woodworking and being a handyman. He was also a baseball fan of the Kansas City Royals and had played for the Catharine Owls and the Hays Larks. Matt was a modest, hardworking family man who truly believed in his faith and family.

He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Georgine "Jeanie" Staab of the home in Hays; a son, Gary Staab of Hays; two daughters, Sherri Ruder and husband Rich of Munjor and Debbie Werth and husband Dave of Hays; eight grandchildren, Chad (Jackie) Ruder of Hays, Nichole (Randy) Sauer of Hays, Landon Staab of Boise, Idaho, Logan Staab of Hays, Brandon (Amanda) Werth of Liberty, Missouri, Matthew (Jen) Werth of Hays, Cory Werth and Tyler Werth of Hays as well as six great grandchildren, Shannon and Amy Ruder, Sadie, Connor, Bladyn and Bodhi Werth.

He was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers, Edwin, Walter, Lawrence and Alfred Staab and two sisters, Albertine "Tina" Goetz and Irene Rohr.

Funeral services will be 10 AM Monday, November 6, 2017 at St. Nicholas of Myra Catholic Church in Hays. Burial will follow in St. Joseph's Cemetery. Visitation will be Sunday 4 PM – 8 PM and Monday 9 AM – 9:30 AM all at Brock's-Keithley Funeral Chapel and Crematory 2509 Vine Hays, KS 67601. Sunday a Knights of Columbus rosary will be at 6:30 PM followed by a parish vigil service at 7 PM all at the funeral chapel.

Memorial contributions are suggested to St. Nicholas Church, HaysMed Hospice or Masses.
