Lawrence was born a US citizen in Grand Forks County, North Dakota. He was the son of Hoosier-born James Burton HOOKER and Michigan-born Adeline McMASTER. Born in rural North Dakota, Lawrence's parents moved the family to rural British Columbia when Lawrence was about two years old. His parents established themselves as Canadian citizens, and Lawrence lost his by-birth US citizenship. Lawrence grew up as the oldest of several siblings. (A sister born before Lawrence died in infancy before Lawrence was born.) Lawrence married Thelma Margretta Dorene "Dolly" HUTCHINSON on January 24, 1934, in Dome Creek, British Columbia. A son was born in December of 1934 and a second son in February 1936. In March 1937, Lawrence buried his 1st born son. In May 1939, a daughter was born and in July 1940, another son. Lawrence attempted to enter the USA on March 13, 1941, from Vancouver, British Columbia, headed for Los Angeles, California. His stated plan was to study at National Technical Schools and to remain permanently in the USA. Lawrence described himself as 5 feet and 5 1/2 inches tall, with brown hair, brown eyes, and a medium complexion. His request for entry was rejected, for some unknown medical reason. On January 20, 1942, he again attempted to enter the USA, "to reside permanently." He described himself as a metal worker in 1942, and he was allowed entry, along with his wife and their three young children. He had an aunt living in Los Angeles -- Dora Leona HOOKER (m. MALONEY). The aunt was a registered nurse and a veteran of World War I, a married woman with three children, living at 425 Oakford Drive, East Los Angeles. Lawrence declared his intent to become a US citizen on October 5, 1942, and he re-gained his US citizenship by naturalization on January 30, 1948. In 1948, his address was 340 S. LaVerne Ave., Los Angeles, California. Before November 1952, Lawrence's marriage to the mother of his children had ended; that month, she married John CRITES in Los Angeles. Lawrence married again before April 1955 to Alpha Lee MAYNARD. Lawrence and Alpha lived at 845 N. Bradshawe, in Montebello, California. Lawrence supported his family working as a plumber.

"In September 2001, after this survey, the ashes of Raymond Wallace Hooker (February 1, 1936 to March 4, 2000) and Lawrence James Hooker (December 31, 1911 to April 13, 2001) were interred. The current owner showed us the cemetery, which was originally for the Hooker family and then extended for the Muellers."
