Lowell Skeen Peterson passed away October 29, 2017 at the age of 80 due to complications related to cancer.

He was born July 20, 1937, the fifth of six children, to Rulon Powell and Naomi Skeen Peterson.

He was raised in Weber County and graduated from Weber High School in 1955 as class salutatorian.

He served in the New England LDS Mission from 1957 to 1959.  Just 9 days after returning from his mission he married Kathleen Shurtleff in the Salt Lake LDS Temple.

He graduated from Utah State University with a degree in Political Science and Economics and was intent on going to law school until J. Reuben Clark, Jr. encouraged him to continue his father’s profession as a cattleman with Peterson Bros. Herefords.

Lowell succeeded in many professions over his eighty years: real estate developer, home builder, restaurateur, elected official, government relations, entrepreneur, and investor, but most of all he enjoyed being on his ranches in Utah, Wyoming, and Nevada where he loved to teach his sons and grandsons the value of hard work.

Lowell served 14 years in elected office as a State Representative, State Senator, and Weber County Commissioner. He served on many boards and councils and especially enjoyed serving on the Board of Trustees at Utah State University, including 2 years as chairman; the Weber School District Foundation, the Utah State Fair Board, and as a founding member of the Weber County Fair Board. He received the Distinguished Service Award from WSU and Distinguished Alumnus Award from USU.

Lowell served in many capacities in the LDS Church, including Bishop of the Roy 11th Ward, many years on High Councils, in the Young Men’s Organization, as a service missionary to the Ogden Pioneer Ward and Gospel Doctrine Teacher.  He also served in various adult leadership positions in the Boy Scouts of America over many years for which he was honored with the Silver Beaver award by the Trapper Trails Council.

He had a great love of music and was talented in singing and playing the trumpet. He could burst into song at any time, especially in greeting his children and grandchildren.  Fittingly, in his later years he wrote words and music to a hymn that spoke of his love for family and testimony of the gospel.

Lowell is survived by his wife of 58 years, Kathleen; his brother, Wayne (Joan), Salt Lake; his children, Dale (Cindy), Layton; Laurie (Daniel) Kite, Hooper; Lisa (John) Powell, St. George; Lorna (Shaun) Oborn, Nibley; Doug (Cathy), Riverdale; MaryAnn (John) Christiansen, Riverdale; and Emily (Wes) Whitby, Uintah; 33 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by siblings and spouses, Ronald (Margaret) and Darrell, Janice Child (Earl), and Marilyn Ellis (LeGrande).

Despite his involvement in so many different business endeavors, church and community commitments, his greatest love and greatest investment of time has always been in his wife, children, and grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, November 4, 2017 at 11 a.m. at the Wolf Creek Ward, 2900 N Highway 162, Eden, Utah.  Friends may visit with family on Friday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Lindquist’s Ogden Mortuary, 3408 Washington Blvd. and Saturday from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. at the church.

Interment, Lindquist’s Memorial Gardens of the Wasatch, 1718 Combe Rd.
