He married Esther Salamea Margaretta Ellebrecht on 03 May 1925 at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Des Peres, St. Louis, Missouri.
Emil and Esther had five children; Kenneth E., Emil Elmer, Marvin A., Jean Leona and Glen.
As a young man Emil "Cap" Hoehne worked at the greenhouses of Charles Meier, Inc. In 1922 he entered the grocery business at the Hoehne AG store on the Southwest corner of Manchester and Ballas Roads.
He served as a member of the first Board of Trustees of the City of Des Peres, and as its Chairman (Mayor) from 1939-1942. At about the same time he served as President of Saint Paul's Lutheran Church in Des Peres.
In 1942 they left the grocery store business and bought a farm in Gasconade County, Mount Sterling, Missouri. In 1970 they retired and spent thirteen years on Table Rock Lake at Shell Knob, Missouri. In 1983 they moved to Kirkwood and became a part of Concordia Lutheran Church. Emil moved to Lutheran Altenheim about a month before his death. He suffered a broken hip on November 3 and was a patient at Lutheran Medical Center. He developed pneumonia and died peacefully in the presence of his wife and some of his family.
