John Anthony May was born June 6, 1927, in Bakersfield and died on June 12, 2006, in Hesperia. Preceding John in death were his parents, Carl Anthony and Kathryn Gertude May. John leaves son, William Anthony May, his wife, Tanya, and their children, Travis William and Kendall Rene, all of Ontario; daughter, Stephanie Lee May Van Diest, her husband, Bill, and their children, Matthew Zebulon and EmmaLee Kate, all of Kimberly, Idaho; as well as his best friend, Dorothy Sheaffer of Victorville. Jack was drafted right out of high school during World War II, while attending Cathedral High School in Los Angeles. He joined the U.S. Navy and after the war ended, he returned to graduate from high school. Jack grew up and lived most of his life in Eagle Rock. He went to work for the Southern Pacific Railroad as an apprentice electrician at the Los Angeles yard. In the 1960's, he was transferred to Oakland, but returned to Los Angeles to retire at age 55. Jack enjoyed hunting and fishing -- June Lake and the Owens Valley were his favorite camping areas -- but his favorite pass time was looking for brass and running ground in his jeep. He taught his kids to shoot and fish at an early age, and he passed on his love for the desert to his two children and grandchildren. After Jack retired, he built a home in Hesperia on the lot his parents had bought in the 1940's. Once a Joshua tree landscape with the occasional desert tortoise, Jack had his own little desert oasis with his fruit trees that kept him constantly busy. Jack was a member of the National Rifle Association and was an avid listener of Rush Limbaugh. He had a great memory and would often sit and relate stories of life in Southern California, before the freeways and the rush of life. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday, with a rosary at 7 p.m., at Dudley Apple Valley Mortuary, 16095 Tuscola Road in Apple Valley. Mass will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Holy Family Catholic Church, 9974 I Ave. in Hesperia. Internment will follow at Sunset Hills Memorial Park, 24000 Waalew Road in Apple Valley. Dudley Apple Valley Mortuary is handling arrangements.
