Mary Catherine Alderson was one of five children born to Dr. Christoper Alderson and Mary Perry Gibson. She was born in Russell County, Virginia where her father practiced medicine, but before 1870 the family relocated to Glade Spring, Washington, Virginia.
Mary married James Nelson Buchanan on May 1, 1872 and had five children in Washington, Virginia.
She died quite young in 1898 and probably was buried in the Alderson Cemetery, along with her parents and siblings. Her husband died in 1934 and a daughter buried him in her own (Edmondson) family plot in the Greenfield Baptist Church Cemetery.
