James R. "Dick" Wilhite, 87, of Connersville, died Thursday, January 6, 2011, at his residence.

Dick was born September 21, 1923 in Fayette County to Lawrence D. and Lula Wright Wilhite. Following high school, he served in the U.S Navy as a Seaman First Class aboard the USS Herbert C. Jones. His military decorations included the EAME Campaign ribbon with three stars, American Area Campaign ribbon, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign ribbon and a Commendation from the Commander of the 8th Fleet. Dick was employed at American Kitchens from 1946 to 1953 and the as an apprentice cabinet maker for six years under the tutelage of Chuck Fettig. From 1960 to 1992, he owned and operated Wilhite Tile and Cabinet. Dick was well known as a master woodworker and many of his creations remain in use today. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church and was a former member of the Elks Lodge. Dick enjoyed jazz music, cars and traveling.

Dick is survived by two children and their spouses: Melody Danos and LeRoy of Connersville, Steve Wilhite and Linda of West Chester, Ohio; four grandchildren and their spouses: Chris Wilhite and Cathy of Liberty Township, Ohio, Amy Cummins and Mike of Landen, Ohio, Risa Gethers and Matt of West Chester, Ohio, Brian Weaver and his fiancé, Susie of Scott Valley, California; three great-grandchildren: Cory and Justin Cummins, Joelle Wilhite; three step-children and their spouses: Darlene Knight and Jennings, Ron Young and Phyllis, all of Connersville, Ted Young and Jackie of Liberty; a sister-in-law: Inez Binder of South Bend.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife: the former Jerry Doub, whom he married June 14, 1946, she died in 1994; his second wife: the former Helen Campbell Young, whom he married June 9, 1998; she died in 2006; a brother Louis Wilhite and an Uncle and Aunt: Robert Wright and Shirley.
