US Congressman, Businessman, Author. Born near what is now Cologne, Germany, he emigrated to the United States with his father and two of his brothers. They settled in St. Louis, Missouri and establish the "4S" Flour Mills, which won gold medals at the Chicago World's Fair of 1893 and the St. Louis World's Fair of 1904. The "4S" represented for the four Sessinghauses men in their family. During the Civil War, he and his brothers took their places in the 5th Regiment, U.S. Reserve Corps; he served as a private in A company. After the expiration of his 90-day enlistment, he was exempted from military service because his work at the flour mills was determined to be essential to the war effort. In later life, he was active in local political affairs and was elected vice president of the St. Louis school board. As a Republican, he successfully contested the election of Richard G. Frost to the Forty-seventh Congress and served in Congress for two days only, March 2nd and 3rd, 1883. He complied the "Sessinghaus Vs. Frost; Testimony and Papers in the Contested-election Case of Sessinghaus Vs. Frost, from the Third Congressional District of Missouri", Volume 1 and 2, which was published in 1882 and now can be purchased for nearly $50.
