Dr. Allen was known throughout Mercer county as an outstanding physician, having been located in Keithsburg since 1877 where he gave unstintingly of his knowledge and strength in helping the sick. Over a year ago he suffered a stroke and had been confined to his home most of the time since. Death relieved his suffering Saturday afternoon about 4:30 o'clock.
He was the seventh son of Sheldon and Fidelia Leach Allen and was born in Galesburg Nov. 23, 1851. He grew to manhood in Galesburg and Knox colleges. At the age of 22 he began his practise with Dr. J. E. Vivion of Galesburg. Afterwards he studied in Hahneman Medical college in Chicago, graduating in 1877. That summer he was married to Florence Condee of Chicago and they came to Keithsburg where they have since resided.
He was a partner with Omar Lloyd in the Keithsburg drug store for many years and served as president of the school board for 18 years. Surviving are the widow and a son James Allen of Aledo. Two sons and a daughter preceded him in death.
