Chauncey Ray Garrett, Sr., 81, of Memphis, died comfortably at home the morning of Sunday, January 18, 2009 while enjoying the Bellevue services on TV with his longtime sweetheart Marian Hood.

Known as C.R. or Ray to his friends and family, he enlisted in the US Navy at 17 where he served primarily aboard the USS Zellars during WWII. After his discharge he went to work for his father at C.C. Garrett and Son Hardwood Floors. Later, he worked for American Airlines until his retirement.

He was preceded in death by his parents Clifton Chauncey and Louise Garrett, his twin sister Fay Nease and his beloved wife Merry Sunshine who died in 1957 leaving him alone to care for their three young children.

He leaves behind their children Merry Gay Moss (Jerry) of Arlington, TX Cheerie Lee Flynn (Roger) of Bartlett, TN and Chauncey Ray Garrett, Jr. (Jodie) of Memphis; his nieces Sandy Nease Hammond of Charleston, SC and Linda Nease of Berkeley, CA; 6 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren.

Following his wishes, his remains were donated for research.

A private memorial service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that a donation be made in the name of Bradley Butler to the Muscular Dystrophy Association (888-HELP-MDA).
