Carl Lee Bowen Jr., 95 years of age, of Albemarle, passed away Saturday, October 28, 2017 at his home in Albemarle.
Dr. Bowen was born February 15, 1922 in Greensboro, North Carolina to the late Carl L. Bowen Sr. and the late Margaret Stallings Beam and step-father, the late W. F. Beam.
He was also preceded in death by his son, Steve Bowen.
Dr. Bowen graduated from Harrison-Chilhowee Baptist Academy in Seymour, Tennessee in 1940. He attended Carson-Newman College in Jefferson City, TN, Georgia School of Technology in Atlanta, GA, and graduated with the degree of Doctor of Dental Surgery in 1950 from Emory University School of Dentistry in Atlanta, GA. Bowen's education was interrupted as he served his country from November, 1942 until June 1946 in the Marine Corp during World War II. His wartime experiences included the Pacific Theater and the Occupation of China. Bowen began his dental practice in Albemarle in 1950 upon his graduation from dental school. He continued practicing dentistry for almost 60 years until his health forced him to retire in 2009. Dr. Bowen also served more than 60 years of community service including serving monthly at the Community Care Clinic providing free dental care for those in need.
Carl was a member of the NC Dental Society; The American Dental Society; Albemarle Masonic Lodge #703; Oasis Shrine Temple; Royal Order of Jesters - Charlotte Court #109; China Marines Association; Carolina Steiners Club; and a Charter member of the Albemarle Optimist Club.
Dr. Bowen served as President Albemarle Optimist Club; Lt. Governor and Governor of the NC Optimist District; vice President of Optimist International 1964-1965; President of the Stanly County Country Club; President of the Albemarle Chapter of the American Field Service; Chairman of the Stanly District of Boy Scouts of America; Chairman of the Stanly County United Fund; Chairman for Crippled Children and Cerebral Palsy Stanly County Fund Drive; Member of Stanly County Board of Social Services 1965-1972, serving as Chairman of the Board 71-72; Chairman of the Stanly County Democratic Party Executive Committee 1985-89; Board of Trustees of Boys and Girls Homes of NC at Lake Waccamaw since 1966.
He received the Distinguished Governors Award and the Vice President's Award as the Top Governor in the Southeastern Region of Optimist International 1958-59; Optimist of the Year 1957-58 by the Albemarle Optimist Club; Stanly County Senior Man of The Year 1963 by the Albemarle Junior Chamber of Commerce; and Stanly County Shriner of The Year by the Stanly County Shrine Club, and Chairman Emeritus of Boys and Girls Homes of NC at Lake Waccamaw.
The family will receive friends from 5:00 - 7:30 pm, Wednesday, November 1, 2017, at Hartsell Funeral Home Albemarle. The funeral service will be on Thursday, November 2, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. at First Baptist Church of Albemarle, 202 N. Second Street, Albemarle, NC, officiated by Reverend Andy Jung. Burial will follow at the Fairview Memorial Park, 1425 East Main Street, Albemarle, with full Military Honors.
