VFW unveils bust to honor Tom Green
A man who spent most of his life in service to the country and then to its veterans was honored on his birthday Wednesday.
Tom Green was a decorated Marine Corps veteran who served his country during two tours of duty in Vietnam, including fighting in the Battle of Khe Sanh.
After he left that service, Green devoted himself to serving those who had enlisted alongside him, spending more than 20 years as the McMinn County Veterans Service Officer. During that time he worked both individually and as part of such veterans' service organizations as VFW Post 5146, AMVETS Post 106, American Legion Post 68, Disabled American Veterans No. 93, Vietnam Veterans of America, the Marine Corps Heritage Foundation, the Third Marine Division Association, and Khe Sanh Veterans.
On July 4, which would have been Green's 71st birthday, he was honored by his fellow veterans at the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post 5146 in a ceremony that revealed a bust of him.
"We're honoring him for his service here for 20-plus years," former Post Commander Jack Ferrell said during the presentation. "It's an honor for me to unveil Tom. He did all these things for so many people."
Comments were made during the ceremony of how Green assisted veterans and their spouses and widows get the benefits they had earned as part of their service.
"He went the extra mile for the veterans and widows who couldn't help themselves," Ferrell said.
Green's daughter, Christie, also spoke and said she hopes her father's legacy can live on into the future.
"Let my dad be an example to us," she said. "No matter how painful or how deep our wounds are, we still have a way to serve others. I think it gave him a way to salve his own wounds as he helped others. I'm so happy to see his memory be honored this way."
Christie Green added that she hoped others would take to heart the example put forth by her father.
"Let's make his real legacy be the ripples of kindness he started with his good work," she said.
