James H. Hanneken, a psychologist, was a political and social activist with vision. He was a fierce advocate for many community organizations striving to address social problems, mental health issues, sexism, domestic violence, injustices against the gay community and assisting people with HIV/AIDS. He was diagnosed with HIV in the mid 1980's and succumbed to the disease.

He served as director of Second Step, and as a counselor at Family Resources Inc. He established a student counseling service at Duff's Business School, and worked with students from the University of Pittsburgh's School of Social Work. He held memberships in American Mental Health Counselors Association, American Counselors Association, National Board for Certified Counselors, Greater Pittsburgh Sexuality Council. He was Co-Chair of the National Organization for Men Against Sexism, and of the National Task Group on Men and Mental Health. He was also President of the Pittsburgh Men's Collective, and Director of the Shepherd Wellness Community.
