Civil War US Congressman. After studying engineering in Pennsylvania, he moved to Missouri to work in the mining and iron business, establishing the successful Iron Mountain Iron Company. After an unsuccessful bid for Congress in 1862, he was elected as a Democrat to represent the 3rd District in the United States House of Representatives to fill the vacancy caused by the death of John W. Noell. He served from December 7, 1863, to March 3, 1865, after which he returned to St. Louis and engaged in the pharmaceutical business before resuming his career in mining.
