She was born November 7, 1935 in Paris, the daughter of the late Loyd E. and Marjorie Lucille (Runyan) Duzan. She married Jack L. Dawson on November 22, 1956 in Paris and he survives.

Other survivors include three children, Monique L. Dawson of Charleston, Illinois, Patrick L. (Susan) Dawson of Papillion, Nebraska and Timothy J. (Julie) Dawson of Carmel, Indiana; a sister, Marcella Piantedosi of Shelburn, Indiana; a daughter-in-law, Karyn Dawson Hughes of Terre Haute, Indiana; nine grandchildren, Scott (Darla) Dawson, Heather and Alea Brandt, Brooke Dawson, Adam (Katie) Dawson, Jacob and Nathan Dawson, and Kathryn and Kelli Dawson; seven great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by a son, Michael E. Dawson, and a sister, Millie Pennington.

Mrs. Dawson was a 1953 graduate of Paris High School and earned her Bachelor’s Degree in Education from Eastern Illinois University in 1958. She was a member of Otterbein United Methodist Church and of the former Trinity United Methodist Church, where she had served as organist and choir director for a number of years. She had served as an adjudicator for the IESA Solo and Ensemble Contest for many years. She was especially proud of having founded the District 95 Elementary Children’s Choir in 1971, and she remained its director until her retirement in 1990. She was a talented cook, enjoyed quilting, traveling, and camping, and loved working crossword puzzles. She had a passion for helping young people discover music, and found great reward in seeing former students’ lives continue to be enriched by the arts through adulthood. When asked how she wished to be remembered, Mrs. Dawson responded, “For doing my best as a mother and as a teacher.”
