DeWitt C. Johnson, who rounded out his 90th year on March 9, is not a native born citizen of Lock Haven, but this city has been his home for 74 years. A veteran of the Civil War, one of his brightest moments in his service as the corporal in charge of the guard of honor at the Philadelphia Railroad station when the special train bearing the body of the martyred president Abraham Lincoln, passed through on its way from Washington to Illinois.
Born in Cooperstown, N.Y., Mr. Johnson came to Lock Haven at the age of 16 years when his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Johnson, moved here. He assisted his father in operation the first dray line in the city.
Three of Mr. Johnson’s five brothers also served during the Civil War. Mr. Johnson’s war record, covering three enlistments, began when he joined the Union army as a volunteer, giving his age as 21, though he was but 18 at the time. He participated in many of the major battles of the war but escaped without a wound.
After his return to Lock Haven, following his last honorable discharge from the army, Mr. Johnson entered the employ of the Pennsylvania Railroad Company, serving as a member of the freight train crew operating between this city and Renovo. Later, taking up the moulder’s trade, he was employed at Corning, N.Y., which he still considers a second home, spending part of each year with friends and relatives there.
Mr. Johnson is the oldest member of the Lock haven Lodge of Elks and holds the distinction of being so far as can be ascertained, the oldest man to be initiated into that order. He was past his 90th birthday when he joined the local lodge. One of his hobbies is pool, and he plays a good game.
Active and alert as a nonagenarian, Mr. Johnson comes from a long lived strain. His mother lived nearly 100 years.
