Anna Jane McCoy was born in Bladen, Webster County, Nebraska, Aug. 9, 1884, to John and Cenith (Rinehart) McCoy. She was four years old when her parents died in a flu epidemic, both within days of each other in 1888. Following the deaths of their parents, Anna and her younger sister, Almira, were taken in by two different families, even though they may have had as many as 12 older siblings from John McCoy's first and second marriages, a number of whom were old enough to take the girls in. John's first wife, Eleanor Hancock, died about 1870.

Anna was taken in by a family named Borgaard. I can find no evidence that they legally adopted her, but in many sources and documents, Anna was thereafter most often referred to as Anna Borgaard.

Anna married Andrew Rasmus Rasmussen Feb. 21, 1907, at Fredericksburg Lutheran Church outside of Minden, Nebraska. She and Andrew are buried in Fredericksburg Cemetery adjacent to the church.
