On Monday, Oct. 23, 2017, at Palmetto Health Tuomey Hospital, Sumter, God sent an angel of mercy to Sarah Ann Moses Wheeler and said, "You have fought a courageous battle my daughter, but now it's time to come home." She then closed her eyes to rest, for her life's work had been done. Sarah Ann Moses Wheeler was born on Feb. 10, 1935, in Mayesville to the late Spencer Davis and Virginia Moses.
She was immersed in a Christian community that would be her lifelong support from an early age. Sarah attended Mrs. Boley Educational and Industrial School.
Sarah met the love of her life, James "JC" Wheeler, and they were later united in holy matrimony. Over 15 years, Sarah welcomed nine children into their home. Sarah raised her children (three boys and six girls) with discipline, humility and patience. From the very beginning, she dedicated her children to God and encouraged them to explore the gospels. Sarah was a devoted, kindhearted and God-fearing mother who loved holidays and family get-togethers - any chance to spend time with her family was important to her.
Sarah was a kind and soft-spoken individual who loved her church and her community. She was passionate about the Lord. She was a dedicated member of the Galilee Missionary Baptist Church for 70 years. At Galilee, Sarah served for almost 30 years on various choirs, the gospel, senior and mass choirs. Sarah was named "Mother of the Year," "Grandmother of the Year" and recently "Missionary of the Year" in the church. Sarah was also an active member of the Mayesville Senior Citizens Group for years until her health failed. She will be incredibly missed by all who knew and loved her; however, they find great comfort in knowing that she is at peace with her creator.
In addition to her parents and husband, Sarah was preceded in death by a son, Robert L. Wheeler, and two brothers, Robert L. Moses and John Moses.
Sarah leaves to cherish her precious memories: eight children, Barbara A. Wheeler of Mayesville, Pensicola (James) Banks of Columbia, James (Stephanie) Wheeler of Benton Harbor, Michigan, Walter (Anita) Wheeler of Bluffton, Patricia (James) Slater of Sumter, Deborah L. Wheeler of Mayesville, Deloris (Luther) Thomas of Columbia and Virginia Wheeler of Mayesville; one adopted daughter, Betty "BJ" Riley of Columbia; 15 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren; one great-great grandchild; two sisters-in-law, Mary Moses of Washington, D.C., and Mamie Moses of Bronx, New York; a very special cousin and soul sister, Ms. Hannah Mae Johnson; four special friends, Mrs. Helen Walker, Mrs. Lillie Joe, Mrs. Patricia "Sandy" Wheeler and Mrs. Elizabeth Tiller; caregiver, Kimberly Lowery; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
The family is receiving relatives and friends at the home, 16 Congress St., Mayesville.
Homegoing celebration: Galilee Missionary Baptist Church, 126 E. Sumter St., Mayesville, with the Rev. Eugene Myers, pastor, eulogist.
