Sypreon Pratt Small was born in Maine to Harrison Small and Abigail Lombard Small. His family moved to Illinois in the 1850’s. As a young man he enlisted in the Illinois Cavalry to fight for the Union during the Civil War. Returning to Grundy County after the war, he turned to farming land near Verona for his vocation.
