Sam is the son of Granville Stuart (a man of some notoriety as a representative of stockmen and as a US Envoy) and Arbonne Warren. (Some give her a Shoshone surname as shown in her FAG memorial. )He is a brother to Kate, Thomas, Charles, Mary, Elizabeth, Emma and Edward. His mother died when he was 9 years old and his father remarried two years later.
Sam married Albertina Lofgren Slenes who was divorced, her children gone to live with their father. The couple lived first in Helena and then in Lewistown. Their marriage notice lists Sam's mother as Ellen Powell though his death certificate lists Arbonne Warren as his mother. He and Albertina had two children, Granville Jessie and Martha Jean. Albertina was admitted to the asylum in 1925 and died here almost 16 years later of metastatic breast cancer and dementia praecox (schizophrenia). Their son was adopted and his name changed to Maurice Hain. Their daughter was sent to the Montana Orphanage and was apparently eventually adopted by the Griswold family. She later served in the US Army during WWII and married a Mr. Glasier.
Sam would be admitted here years later and after a stay of 2 yr 7 mo 20 days succumbed to coronary arteriosclerosis. They are both buried on the hospital grounds.
