Ilo was the first child born to Sherman Ellis and Dovie E. Cormany, who married on 20 Jan 1891 in Marshall Co., Indiana. The couple had three children together—Ilo Mae (4 Mar 1892 – 13 Jan 1913), Russell E. (19 Apr 1896 – 12 Jul 1980), and (dau) Frances Jean (4 Apr 1902 – 25 Jan 1991).

The family appeared together on the 1900 Census, living in Center Township, Marshall Co., Indiana. Sherman Ellis, aged 33, was a farmer. Dora, aged 31, reported that she had had two children, both of them still living. There with their parents were Ilo, aged 8, and Russell, aged 4. Also living with the family were two boarders and 18-year-old servant-girl Bessie Johnson.

The family was still living in Center Township, on the Michigan Road, when the 1910 Census came around. Sherman Ellis, aged 42, was busy with the farm. Dovie, aged 40, reported that she had had three children, all three still living—Ilo, aged 18, Russell, aged 14, and Frances, aged 8. Also living with the family were 16-year-old hired hand Frad Krouse, and Dovie’s 64-year-old widowed mother-in-law Sarah Cormany.

That winter, Ilo caught the flu, which led to worse things. (From: The Weekly Republican, Plymouth, IN – Thu 16 Mar 1911 pg. 2) “Miss Ilo Ellis Dangerously Ill. Mill Ilo Ellis, daughter of Sherman Ellis, living five miles south of the city on the Michigan road, is lying very low at her home with septic meningitis, result of an attack of influenza, contracted eight weeks ago. But little hope of her recovery entertained.”

Ilo miraculously recovered. A year later, she was back on her feet. (From: The Weekly Republican, Plymouth, IN – Thu 11 Jan 1912 pg. 2) “Mrs. Dr. Eidson went to Inwood Saturday where she sang at the Inwood church in the evening. Miss Ilo Ellis went with her, and presided at the piano as accompanist. The entertainment was for the purpose of raising a fund to purchase a new instrument for the church.” (From: The Weekly Republican, Plymouth, IN – Thu 8 Feb 1912 pg. 2) “Mr. and Mrs. W.O. Ellis of South Bend have been visiting the former’s brother, Sherm Ellis and family for the past week. They left today for Xenia, O., accompanied by their niece, Ilo Ellis, who expects to visit friends and relatives for a few weeks.”

A year later, Ilo developed acute laryngitis which may have been brought on by diphtheria. She died on 13 Jan 1913 at age 20.
