Robert Leggett was the son of John Leggett and Elizabeth Jackson. His parents came to Canada in 1809 with their youngest two children and settled in South Crosby, Leeds County where they owned 500 acres.

Robert Leggett emigrated from Ireland in May 1817, leaving from Dublin aboard the Brigantine Atlantic. The ship arrived at the Port of Quebec on 4 August 1817, and he was held in quarantine until 13 August 1817. Robert arrived in South Crosby on 19 December 1817, where he received a land grant for 100 acres located on South Half of Lot 2 Concession 4 of the Township of South Crosby.

Robert Leggett married Alice Bell at South Crosby in 1833 and they had nine children: James Bell, Henry, Gore, William Buttle, Robert Atkin, Louise "Lucy" Jane, William Samuel, William Thomas, and Maria.
