Hazel Marie Del Tonto

April 1, 1933 – December 9, 2008

MONTROSE — Longtime Montrose resident, Hazel Marie (Sutherlin) Del Tonto, age 75, died peacefully in her sleep at home, early Tuesday morning, Dec. 9, 2008.

Hazel was born April 1, 1933 to William and Olga (Loring) Sutherlin in Hatch, New Mexico. She spent her childhood in Albuquerque, N.M. and moved with her family at the age of 16 to Colorado, graduating from Ridgway High School. She attended Fort Lewis College in Durango and received her associate degree in Agriculture and Animal Husbandry. She married Joseph Del Tonto in Montrose and together they raised seven children. Although their marriage later ended in divorce, they remained good friends and enjoyed holidays and get togethers with their children and grand-children.

Throughout her lifetime, Hazel maintained and developed an interest in the Native American culture. She enjoyed collecting arrowheads and rocks with her children when they were younger, and later with her grandchildren. Hazel loved being outdoors, whether farming, ranching, shepherding or with her children’s 4-H clubs. She was also a Brownie Troop leader.

Hazel loved the camaraderie of sitting around the campfire at hunting camp on the Alpine, regardless of the weather. She loved animals, wild and tame. She was quite the dancer, and enjoyed socializing with her friends doing the polka and square dancing. Hazel was known for her independent nature and her free spirit. She drove over mountain roads and when they ended, she kept going if that was her intent, bound and determined to get where she wanted to go. She was kindhearted and helpful, a generous person who sought to bring out the best in others. Her grandchildren called her ‘Grama Sweetie.’

Hazel is survived by her children, Helene Tohill of Montrose, Joey (Charlene) Del Tonto of Montrose, Patty (Mike) Bertram of Aurora, Kathy Del Tonto of Montrose, Danny Del Tonto of Montrose, Roy (Sandy) Del Tonto of Montrose, and Ben (Jennifer) Del Tonto of Montrose, as well as her grand-children Kenneth Tohill of Montrose, Jesse Tohill of Grand Junction, Michael Del Tonto of Aurora, Jamie (Chris) Thompson of Cheyenne, WY, Travis Jackson of Aurora, Mandy Bertram of Aurora, Shasta Roberts of Huntington Beach, CA, Ty Roberts and Cameron Roberts, both of Grand Junction, Rochelle (Jose) Suarez of Grand Junction, Nicole and Taylor Del Tonto of Montrose, and Hunter Del Tonto of Montrose, two great-grandchildren, Elicia and Israel Suarez of Grand Junction, as well as her brothers, Bud (Bunny) Sutherlin of Soldanta, Alaska, Patrick Sutherlin of Grand Junction, Jerry Sutherlin of Montrose, and her sisters Jody Brown of Montrose, and Linda Weekly of Colbran.

Hazel was preceded in death by her parents, one grandchild, Jonathan Tohill, and her step-father, Everett Smidt.

A private family visitation is scheduled for Hazel. A Memorial Service in honor and celebration of Hazel’s life will be held Saturday, Dec. 13, at 11 a.m. at the Abundant Life Church on Niagara in Montrose. Arrangements are under the care and direction of Valley Lawn Funeral Home and Cemetery, 505 S. 2nd St., Montrose (970) 249-4400.
