John was a dredgeman working on the gold dredge 'Hope of Dunkeld', which was dredging in the Clutha River. He was known to have been drinking and was riding home at the end of his shift at 3pm. He was seen going across the river on the punt to the west side, on his way home which was five miles below Dunkeld. He was missing from work the next day. After a search was made, he was found face down in a puddle of water beside the road on the west bank of the Clutha River, his horse not far away and watched over by his two faithful dogs till someone came. He was known to have been intoxicated and this was stated to be the cause of his death. It's also possible his horse had tripped and he'd fallen? The newspaper article says he was "elderly" but the BDM NZ records say 58 yrs old, if it is the correct man. He had lived in the district many years and was well known. An inquest was to be held at Dunkeld and the results might be in the same newspaper in another issue.
He was not married.
