Five days before John was to be married he was counted in the 1900 census. He was at home at 194 South Main Street in South Gardner with his widowed mother, Hattie, three siblings and a boarder. The Cornwells came to the U.S. in 1884. Mrs. Cornwell stated she had given birth to eight children only five of which had survived. The four at home in 1900 were Frank, 25, chair shop worker, John, 23, provision clerk, Mabel, 19, upholsterer and Ethel, 17. The boarder was
Lucinda Atwood, 56, a nurse.

In 1910 and 1920, John and Katherine, were living with her step-mother Ellen) and half-brother John (James) Ryan at 317 Pine Street. John Cornwell was a steam fitter at a steam heater company.

John's widow would remain at the home she grew up in and lived in during her marriage. Her brother would be her companion, according to the 1930 and 1940 census records, as it seems the Cornwells did not have any children. She would eventually rent out part of the home.
