Miss Hickey married John J. Burns, a machinist, in Gardner in 1907. In 1910 they were recorded at 189 West Broadway where they rented an apartment. John was a foreman at a wheel shop. Elizabeth had given birth to a daughter, Marie, who was seventeen months. Her sister Bridget Hickey, 18, also lived there as well as a boarder, Mary Murphy, 16. They were both employed as upholsterers at a baby carriage shop.

By 1920 the Burns family was plus two. They had moved to 16 Sawyer Street in town here and two more daughters had been born: Veronica was nine and Eleanor was five. John was a foreman at a toy factory.

Ten years later the family of five had moved to 334 Pine Street. The father was still making toy wheels. He probably saw them spinning around and around in his dreams (or nightmares) after twenty-years on the same job. The Burns' two eldest daughters were now old enough to work. Mary was a stenographer at a furniture shop and Veronica "Vera" was a clerk at a bank. In 1940 one can just say "ditto" to everything from the previous decade all except Vera had left the home.
