Actor. Born John James Bannon, he was a character actor who was best known for his role of the assistant city editor Art Donovan on the CBS television series "Lou Grant" from 1977 to 1982. Born to film and television actors Jim Bannon and Bea Benaderet, he made his acting debut in 1963 on the television series "Petticoat Junction", a show that his mother starred in. Besides "Petticoat Junction" and "Lou Grant", he would go on to appear in many television series during his career with such credits as "Green Acres", "The Andy Griffith Show", The Beverly Hillbillies", "Daniel Boone", "Lassie", "Mannix", "Charlie's Angels", "Barney Miller", "Trauma Center", "Knots Landing", "Falcon Crest", "St. Elsewhere", "Moonlighting", "Hunter", "Santa Barbara", "Dynasty", "Murder, She Wrote", "Night Court", and "The Golden Girls". He also appeared in numerous films during his career such as "What Ever Happened to Aunt Alice?" (1969), "Little Big Man" (1970), "Death Warrant" (1990), "Da Vinci's War" (1993), "Navajo Blues" (1996), and "Waitin' to Live" (2006). He was also a veteran of the stage, appearing in many productions close to his home of Coeur d'Alene, Idaho through the years. He was married to actress Ellen Travolta for a long time until his passing.
