Carla Jean Allard-Watson found her angel wings on Oct. 20, 2017.

Carla was born Jan. 31, 1969, to Carl and Anne Allard. She grew up in the rural community of Martin, and began to make her mark on the world at an early age. She started to play high school basketball when she was in the 7th grade. She went on to be a star player for the Bennett County Warriors and earned numerous awards in basketball, volleyball and track. She was named South Dakota Miss Basketball for 1986 and inducted into the SD High School Basketball Hall of Fame in 2015.

Carla’s passion for sports continued as she played basketball and volleyball for National College and was inducted into the National American University Athletic Hall of Fame in 2005. Carla also played a season of professional basketball in New Zealand. Her enthusiastic spirit, generous heart, booming voice and sense of fairness made her a wonderful coach. She coached teams at Southwest Middle School, Stevens High, Pinedale Elementary, YMCA and Open Bible Church. With her husband, they organized several basketball camps on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation.

Carla worked as the Program Director for the 21st Century Community Learning Center Program. She was with Career Learning Center and Black Hills Special Services in various roles from 1998 to present and worked part time for Rapid City Honda for six years.

Carla was a force to be reckoned with in all aspects of her life. She has been described as a “warrior” and a “hero.” She demonstrated her strength and determination on the court, with her loved ones, in her career and during many years of cancer treatment. She was fiercely loyal to family and friends. Carla touched many lives.

She is survived by her beloved husband, Kevin; her children, KJ and Kyah; her mother, Anne Allard; sisters, Lesley Dzintars (Viktor), Cindy Allard Hines (Elgin); niece, Amanda Fish (Trevor); and nephews, Ivan Dzintars and Caleb Allard (Nia). Carla had a cherished relationship with her grandnephews, Korbyn and Bekham and her grandniece, Nali. Carla was preceded in death by her father, Carl W. Allard. She has a host of special friends and a team of support that never wavered. She is forever loved.

A Celebration of Life will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 28, at Calvary Lutheran Church.
