Sara Kathleen Waldrop Jackson, of Bumpass, Virginia, was granted her angel wings on March 25, 2016. Her final days were spent surrounded by love in every way. Although not nearly long enough in years, her life was full and remarkable.
A spirited and irreverent woman, Sara graced all of us with her presence. She was the kind of person willing to pick up any challenge. The child of a military officer, Sara never let her nomadic childhood affect her achievements. Though she attended two separate high schools, Copperas Cove High School of Texas and Osbourn High School of Virginia, she was a dedicated student and earned an entry into Who's Who Among American High School Students 1985-1986. She then went on to graduate summa cum laude with a bachelor of journalism from the University of Missouri, Columbia, Missouri.
From school to work, Sara continued to earn awards for her work as an editor for Home Health Care Magazine and as a freelance writer for Texas Monthly, Equus and Virginia, where her article on skydiving was done from firsthand knowledge.
Writing was Sara's first, but not only, love. In her spare time, she was always out having adventures. She enjoyed horseback riding, exploring local and diverse areas, recreating the tastes of far off lands, and spending time with her family.
It is in Sara's family that you'll find her true heart. Her children, Lily and Whit, were the center of her life and the source of her greatest strength. They gave her the will to continue after her diagnosis of breast cancer in 2009 and the sudden death of her husband, John Jackson. In these last few years of her life, she taught us all how to handle adversity with humor, grace, and dignity.
Sara is survived by her children, her parents, Gerry L. and Janelle J. Waldrop of Mineral, Virginia; her brother, Elbridge G. Waldrop and his wife, Elizabeth; her sister Amy and her husband, Andrew Dixon; her aunts, Judy Canipe, Joline White, and Ellen Stutchman; her uncles, Bill Stutchman, Curt Waldrop, Mike Stutchman, and John Buchanan; and numerous, much loved nieces and nephews. Sara is also survived by her loving Bill Stevenson, the man sent to make the last years of her life full of love, laughter, and unending support.
To know Sara was to know the quality of love and a life that exceeds quantity of time.
