Religious Figure. He was an English Baptist hymn writer and pastor. He is remembered for authoring the still- popular hymn "My Hope is Built on Nothing Less." Born to parents who owned a pub, he knew nothing about God as a child. At age 18, he professed the Baptist faith and worked as a cabinet maker in London, England for 37 years. He then became a Baptist minister and pastored the Rehoboth Baptist Church in Horsham, West Sussex, England in 1848 for 26 years.
