Lieutenant Arthur Edward Murphy was the son of the late Mr. Edward Murphy, of Messrs. Nutt and Murphy, solicitors, Melbourne. He was born at Toorak, and sent to Beaumont in England to be educated. When he returned he spent most of his time in New South Wales and Queensland, and was then in Colac for 5 years, engaged in grazing and dairying. He was chairman of directors of the Colac Dairying Company when he left for South Africa. He belonged to the local detachment of the V.M.H. for only a few weeks, and was a fine horseman and a fearless rider.
Arthur Murphy had married Isabel Annie Hamilton Maclean on 13 December 1894. She died 4 years later and this considerably affected him; he left no family. His mother and unmarried sisters are living in London.
