Henry Joseph "Joe" Gillenberg, 78, a Murphysboro businessman for 55 years, died unexpectedly at 10:45 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 20, 1985, in St. Joseph's Memorial Hospital.

Mr. Gillenberg had owned the Gillenberg Furniture Store since 1954. He previously had operated a meat market.

He resided at 202 N. 22nd St.

He was a member of the First Lutheran Church, the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks Lodge No. 572, the Fraternal Order of Eagles Arie 670, and the Loyal Order of the Moose, all in Murphysboro.

Born March 29, 1907, in Murphysboro, he was a son of John and Margaret Schuh Gillenberg.

He married Mercy Violet Haury on Oct. 15, 1938, in Colorado.

He is survived by his wife; two daughters, Shirley Summers, Murphysboro, and Bonnie Maguire, Naperville; two grandchildren, Denise and Joe Summers, Murphysboro; and one great-grandchild.

He was preceded in death by his parents and five sisters.

Services will be 8 p.m. Friday at Pettett Funeral Home, where friends may call after 7 p.m.

Cremation will follow and interment will be at a later date in Pleasant Grove Memorial Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. Joseph's Memorial Hospital.
