Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. Holman began his Civil War service as a second lieutenant in the 4th Regiment, U.S. Reserve Corps, one of the several regiments called into service in St. Louis in May 1861 by Blair & Lyon. He later became lieutenant colonel, 26th Missouri Infantry, & colonel, 1st Infantry Regiment, United States Colored Troops. On March 13, 1865, Holman was promoted to brevet brigadier general for "gallant & meritorious service." After the war he pursued his occupation as architect & master builder in St. Louis.
