He was the son of Thomas and Elizabeth "Betsy" Bray Raper. It is not certain whether he was born in Surry Co. NC or in Kentucky. His siblings were: John, Jesse, Andrew, Sarah (Mrs. Thomas Snoddy), Wesley, Thomas, Shelby, Effie (Mrs. James R. Freeman), and William. He was married to Mary Ann "Polly" Evans. He operated a ferry across the White River at Spencer, Indiana. When he died he left four children, Matilda Betsyann (sometimes called Elizabeth), William Alexander, James Leander, and Granville Fain. He taught in a subscription school and three men owed him for teaching their children when he died. He owed two men for teaching his children then. He owed a man for boarding a child at school. He purchased a ferry in Nov. 1834 from Wm . McClure which operated from the south end of Main Street in Spencer. Several people owed him for ferriages on his probate record. After his death Mary Ann rented the ferry to George McNaught. Mary Ann remarried to Thomas Evans (no proof if they were related and Thomas did say he was born in Tennessee on a census) and had four sons.
