Augusta, GA - Eugene Cox Whaling, 86, of Winston-Salem, NC died Thursday, October 19th at Brandon Wilde in Augusta, GA where he lived for the last 7 years. Gene was born in Greensboro, NC on October 21, 1930 to Herbert and Katy Whaling. He lived and worked in Winston-Salem for the majority of his life. He was a graduate of RJ Reynolds High School and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where he graduated with a B.S. in Industrial Relations. Gene was a pilot in the U.S. Air Force and served a tour in Korea. After retiring from a career in sales and management in the packaging industry, he was a faithful volunteer at Forsyth Memorial Hospital, receiving a lifetime member award, and served as Deacon and Usher at First Presbyterian Church. He enjoyed traveling, golf, fishing and spending time with his many friends and beloved grandchildren.

Gene was preceded in death by his wife Mildred Allen (Mimi) Whaling. He is survived by his daughters Anne Clark (David) of Augusta, Georgia and grandchildren Sarah Henderson (Matt), Emily Clark and Allen Clark; and daughter Catherine Mainous (Joe) of Mooresville, NC and grandchildren Dan Mainous and Liz Mainous. He is also survived by brother-in-law George Crone and nieces Anna Montgomerie, Molly Dewey and Betsy Crone.

Memorial services will be held at First Presbyterian Church in Winston-Salem, NC at 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday, October 24th. Following the service, there will be a visitation at the church.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hospice or donor’s choice.
