Robert William Steinmetz, 68, of Chandler, Arizona passed away unexpectedly.
 
Robert was borrn in Columbus, Ohio, a son of the late Robert and Charlene (Brady) Steinmetz.  
 
Bobby was a member of the 1968 graduating class of St. Mary's High School in Columbus, Ohio.  
 
Bobby was a decorated Vietnam War Veteran, serving as an infantryman with the Army 1st Calvary Division.  He earned several medals and commendations, including 2 bronze stars and a purple heart.  He continued his service through volunteering at the Southeast Veterans Affairs Healthcare Clinic in Gilbert, Arizona since 2011.  He was a member of the 1st Calvary Division Association, the 12th Calvary Regiment Association, the Disabled American Veterans and the American Legion Post 35.
 
Bobby was married to Christie Comanita, with whom he would have celebrated 31 years of marriage on October 11, 2017.  He was the proud father of John Thomas Steinmetz who is attending Northern Arizona University.
 
Bobby was a long time employee of the Arizona Republic newspaper, beginning in 1985 and ending with his retirement in 2011.  
 
He loved his Ohio sports teams.  Fall brought Saturdays watching the Ohio State Buckeyes and the springtime brought searching to find a Cleveland Indians game on TV.  He was an avid collector of hot wheels and comic books.  
 
Bobby is survived by his wife, Christie and his son John, of the home.  He is also survived by two sisters, Charlene (Toots) Gregory of Las Vegas, NV and Margaret (Peggy) Baker of Columbus, OH and a brother Thomas of Brownsville, TX.  He will be missed by many nieces and nephews.  
 
The family will receive friends at the Valley of the Sun Mortuary on Thursday, October 5, 2017 from 6-8 pm with military honors beginning at 6.  A prayer service will be held at 7:30 pm.  A celebration of life Mass will be held at Holy Spirit Catholic Church at 10 am on Friday, October 6, 2017.  The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made in Bobby's name to the Vietnam Veterans of America.
