Lewis F. Hayes, 87, of Grand Island, formerly of McCook, died Wednesday, Oct. 18, 2017, at Good Samaritan Society — Grand Island Village.

Mr. Hayes’ wishes were to be cremated. Inurnment will be at a later date at Fort McPherson National Cemetery in Maxwell. Curran Funeral Chapel is assisting the family.

Lewis was born Jan. 21, 1930, at Central City. He was the son of Fred and Hannah (Thompson) Hayes.


Survivors of his immediate family include his wife of 63 years, Dolores Hayes of Grand Island; children and their spouses, Carol (Robert) Fritz of Owatonna, Minn., Sandra (Ed) Kehler of McCook, Greg (KayLynn) Hayes of Grand Island, Roland (Kari) Hayes of St. Joseph, Mo., and Tyler (Sophista) Hayes of McCook; and a sister, Elaine Huff of Denver, Colo.

Others left to cherish his memory include his six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Lewis received his education in Central City and Atkinson. He entered the U.S. Marine Corps on Feb. 10, 1951, at Denver, Colo., serving until his honorable discharge on Feb. 9, 1954.


He married Dolores Conlin on Oct. 16, 1954, in Loveland, Colo. They made their home in McCook and Lewis was self-employed, owner of McCook Water Conditioning. He retired in 2000 and moved to Grand Island in 2015.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Jane Hansley.
