Dover- Carole Ann Evans of 30 Prospect Street, Dover, NH died October 17, 2017 at the Hyder Family Hospice House, after a sudden illness, with her husband at her side. She was born in Dover on May 5, 1942, the only child of Paul and Pauline (Exas) Krikes.

She attended Dover schools and was a member of the Class of 1960 of Dover High School. She was a member of the National Honor Society, Student Council, Latin, Spanish, Encore and Forensic Clubs and was Assistant Editor of the Year Book.

Carole graduated from the University of New Hampshire in June 1964 receiving a Bachelor of Arts Degree in both elementary education and Spanish.

During her sophomore year at Dover High she met Joe Evans and it was love at first sight. She married Joseph Evans on June 27, 1964, the love of her life, in a military wedding at St. Mary Church in Dover. She then began life as an Army wife and teaching first grade in Maryland and Spanish and English in Alabama.

Returning to Dover in 1967 Carole taught first grade for five years and second grade for 25 years at Horne Street School. She was asked to join the Delta Kappa Gamma Society, an honorary society for outstanding women educators. She went on to serve as president of the Zeta Chapter. She retired in 1997 concluding a 33-year career. She loved children and was loved by them. Often she would hear, “Hello Mrs. Evans” years after her retirement as she was out and about.

In 1967 Carole and Joe built their home on Prospect Street and lived there until her death. On their 43rd wedding anniversary, they also purchased a home in Sarasota, Florida, wintering there until 2014. They celebrated 50 years of marriage in 2014.

Carole, who had a great love for reading, formed a book review club in 1985 that continues to this day.

Writing was another of Carole's loves and she wrote for many years for The Boston Globe, NH Times, Portsmouth Herald, Country Marketplace Magazine and for the Foster's Daily Democrat where she had a regular column. She was an excellent cook with many of her recipes featured in numerous cookbooks.

Carole served on the Board of Managers of the Wentworth Home for the Aged. During this time she started a knitting group with the ladies and made knitted hats for newborns and afghans for people in need.

She loved tea and coordinated many formal Victorian Teas for the Wentworth Home, Langdon Place as well as the Dover Public Library. She taught tea related classes at the University of New Hampshire and headed up an Irish tearoom for our Seacoast Irish Festival.

She was active in St. Mary Church, serving as a Eucharistic Minister and as a co-chair of the church’s 175th anniversary celebration in 2005.

Carole loved many, many things and many, many people, but most of all, she loved being the wife of Joe Evans which brought her the greatest pleasure.

In 2009 she was diagnosed with Primary Lateral Sclerosis (PLS), a variation of Lou Gehrig’s Disease. As opposed to ALS, which is life ending, her illness was life altering. She found it necessary to use a wheelchair due to balance problems. However, that did not slow her down at all. She was involved in life and people until a sudden unrelated illness caused her death.

Carole was predeceased by her parents and is survived by her husband Joe, a cousin Linda Gosselin of Dover and many, many truly wonderful friends.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Wednesday October 25, 2017 at 11am at St. Mary’s Church on the corner of Chestnut and Third Street in Dover. Burial will follow at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Dover.
